Residents of Sanctuary Apartments in Shreveport have running water again. The City of Shreveport has restored service after reaching a payment agreement with the complex's owner, according to a city statement reported Wednesday, Oct. 21, by KTBS and KSLA.
The city cut off water to the complex last Thursday because of an unpaid utility balance, KTBS reported. KSLA reported that the shutoff left dozens of families without running water.
What the owner agreed to
The owner paid the city $68,000 on Tuesday, Oct. 20, after a phone call that morning with the city attorney and Brandon R. Snead, the city's interim director of Water and Sewerage. Under the agreement, the city says the owner:
- Accepted personal responsibility for past-due water and sewer balances on the property.
- Agreed that the city can take the matter to Caddo District Court if it has to enforce the deal.
- Must pay the rest of the past-due balance in full within six months, on top of the regular monthly water and sewer bills.
- Paid the deposit the city code requires.
"This agreement represents an important step toward recovering money owed to the city and making sure property owners are held accountable for their financial obligations," Mayor Tom Arceneaux said in the statement. Snead said the goal "has always been to resolve this matter responsibly, restore water service to the residents, and ensure the city receives the money it is owed."
