What we collect

Information you send us. If you email us (tips, corrections or event requests), we keep your message and email address to respond. We don’t sell it.

Usage data. Like most websites, our host and analytics tools may log standard technical information such as IP address, browser type, pages visited and referring site. We use it to understand which content is useful and to keep the site secure.

Approximate location (town suggestions)

To suggest news for your area, pages ask our host, Cloudflare, for the approximate location it derives from your IP address (city, region and rough coordinates). Your browser compares that with our list of covered towns and may show a “Looks like you’re near …” banner. This happens only on the page. We don’t store the location, log it, send it to anyone else or use it for advertising, and we never redirect you automatically. We don’t ask for your device’s precise (GPS) location.

If you dismiss the banner or choose a town, that choice is saved in your browser’s localStorage (not a cookie) so we don’t ask again. Clear your browser’s site data to reset it.

Cookies and advertising

We may show ads from Google and other ad partners. When we do:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user’s prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to our users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info.
  • If other third-party vendors or ad networks serve ads on this site, we will list them here with links to their sites and opt-out options.

We may use privacy-focused analytics (for example, Cloudflare Web Analytics) or Google Analytics to measure traffic. These tools may set cookies or collect the usage data described above.

Our articles link to government and third-party sites. Their privacy practices are their own.

Children

This site is intended for a general adult audience and doesn’t knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
